In Bloom
A very common medium-sized (34-36mm) dragonfly which is usually found in ponds and other still, or even brackish waters.

Males defend their territories from a preferred perch, rising swiftly to engage with rivals or other dragonflies. One of our easiest dragonflies to observe, offering several engaging and sometimes comical behaviour.

Females are also seen across ponds, usually dipping repeatedly into submerged debris over a wide area.

Frequently encountered in swarms on heaths, commons and in woodland, on fence posts, gates and anywhere they please.
